Scientists Find Harshest Sound in World: Listen

http://news.yahoo.com/scientists-harshest-sound-world-listen-100106699--abc-news-health.html

"Scientists studying the brain's reaction to sound have determined the piercing screech of a knife against a glass bottle to be the human ear's worst nightmare.
A research team at the University of Newcastle examined brain activity in a group of volunteers, who listened to 74 recorded sounds under an MRI machine and ranked each experience."

Human ear's worst nightmare is a knife on glass? Looks like our Aussie friends haven't had the pleasure of sampling some vintage '74 Playin' caterwauling. Perhaps they were afraid that using such a sonic onslaught would do irreparable harm to the MRI machine.

Sir, methinks you have underestimated the raw, destructive power of '74 playing testicles-in-a-vise screeching ala Bob Weir.

Or, was that just the sound of Bobby and Donna making love/fighting?

Yea, I think Bobby's screeching is just as painful to listen to. Sometimes more painful. I usually can't listen to the end of any early Lovelight anymore. It's just unbearable to hear him continually scream and strain his vocal chords during the outro.

You, sir, make an excellent point.

Bobby own raw talent at scoliosis-inducing screeching is often overshadowed. I amend my original statement to now include our favorite denim short-clad troubadour.

I have long held that Donna was simply trying to hold her own, as it were, with Mr. Weir. After all, remove Bobby from the mix, as with JGB; and tough not quite the voice of an angel, she is quite melodious.

Good point. Donna's work in the smaller ensembles is almost always fantastic. Perhaps she WAS trying too hard when playing with all the boys. I have also heard it said she felt when singing in front of the Wall it was next to impossible to her herself. The sharp reduction in Screech Bombs starting in 76 certainly backs this up. It is my opinion, however, that if she were a stronger vocalist she would have been able to overcome any issues with lack of monitors. It is all opinion though. Either way, I have a hard time believing that ANYONE seriously looked forward to her two "moments" in Playin'. For me it was always like anticipating the shot of novacaine at the dentist: you know it's gonna hurt, but it will also get much, much better afterwards.

I believe they also overlooked Phil and Ned.

I'd have to throw in Brent's 79-82 organ-grinder keyboard sound. Only thing missing was the monkey begging for loose change.

caterwauling can be fun, or even funny.

Im glad to have seen Donna for the first time ever this
past summer. What a treat.
Donna reference here---> I love her.
And for those of us who really know: We know when to turn
it down a bit, and then back up.

dammit SDH, now I need a Newcastle (beer that is)

I don't know....like one of the comments on the article I'd put anything spoken by Snooki or sung by Nicki Minaj right up near the top of the list and well ahead of Donna's worst.
